RCS was incorporated as the Glasgow Athenaeum in December 1900, having been established in 1847 to provide further education for adults in the fields of commerce, science, and the arts. It is now an institution of higher education and was awarded degree awarding powers for taught degrees by the Privy Council on 13 May 1994. The principal activity of RCS is the provision of teaching, learning and research in, and for, the performing arts. Programmes offered range from short courses for young children through to PhD and include all genres of the performing arts and arts education.
