Checking a charity

How do I check an OSCR Scottish charity number?

In short: Search the name or Scottish charity number on CharityCompare or the OSCR register. Confirm the registered name matches the appeal, then donate only via official channels. Start at the Scotland hub.

Scottish charities are registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), not the Charity Commission. Every Scottish charity must register, regardless of income.

  1. Take the name or number from the appeal (numbers often start with SC).
  2. Search on CharityCompare or the OSCR register.
  3. Check that the registered name, status and objects match what you were asked to support.
  4. Give through a website or account you typed yourself.

CharityCompare carries a profile for OSCR charities. Where published returns are too thin for a fair Clarity Score, you still get the official number and a link to the register rather than an invented rating. See also CCNI checks and how to check a charity is registered.
