# Mosque charities in the UK

Check the registered charity behind a mosque or Islamic centre before you give: its charity number, trustees and accounts, and the terms of building, Ramadan and general appeals.

## How do I compare mosque charities?

Start by finding the charity that runs the mosque: its registered name can differ from the name on the building. Check its number on the register, read its latest accounts and trustees’ report, and ask which fund an appeal goes to. In England and Wales a mosque charity with income over £5,000 must normally register. CharityCompare compares filings; it does not issue religious rulings or certify Zakat eligibility.

Start with the work

## What do mosque charities do?

The same cause can involve very different services. Use these distinctions to choose what you want to support, then compare organisations doing similar work.

01

### Building, land and expansion appeals

Appeals can fund buying a site, building or extending a mosque, or major repairs. When a charity appeals for a specific purpose, it must use those donations only for that purpose. Large projects can depend on planning permission, contractors and the full target being raised.

**Evidence to look for**Ask whether planning permission is in place (the local planning authority decides), who will own the land or building, the total cost and how much has been raised. Read what the appeal says will happen to donations if the project stalls, falls short or raises more than it needs.

02

### Running costs and community services

General donations can pay for utilities, maintenance, staff and teachers, classes and welfare activities. An unrestricted gift lets trustees use it where the charity most needs it.

**Evidence to look for**Read the trustees’ annual report and accounts on the register: income, spending, reserves and any restricted funds. Check that filings are up to date and that the report explains large changes or a building project in progress.

03

### Ramadan, Eid and Zakat collections

A mosque may collect for several funds, such as general donations, Sadaqah, Zakat or Zakat al-Fitr, and may pass some money to another charity to distribute. Which category applies to your gift is a religious question that CharityCompare does not answer.

**Evidence to look for**Ask which fund your gift goes into, whether it is held separately, and who distributes it and when. If another charity distributes it, check that charity too. A Clarity Score does not certify that a fund is eligible for Zakat.

## Choosing mosque charities to support

Begin with the difference you want your donation to make. A useful shortlist brings together your priorities, the charity’s actual programme and evidence you can check.

-

### 1. Match the organisation and appeal

Check the registered name, charity number and official contact details on the profile and regulator link. Confirm that the appeal and payment destination belong to that organisation. Similar names, local branches and international affiliates can represent different legal entities.

-

### 2. Read the evidence for the programme

Look for a defined goal, the people or places reached, the reporting period and what changed. Ask whether the figures count unique people, repeated contacts or activities. Read limitations and follow-up, and distinguish a charity’s own report from an independent evaluation.

-

### 3. Compare finances in context

Check the accounts year, income, expenditure, reserves where disclosed and current registration context. Research grants, direct services and campaigning have different cost structures. Missing data does not mean zero spending, and a low overhead ratio does not prove stronger results.

-

### 4. Check the terms of your gift

Establish whether a donation supports general work or a named appeal. Check restrictions, what happens if plans change and any ongoing commitment before giving. Follow a trusted official link and keep the confirmation so you can refer back to the stated terms.

## Mosque charities: your questions answered

How do I check if a mosque is a registered charity?+Search the register of charities for England and Wales by name, number or area. Many mosques are run by a charity with a different registered name, such as a trust or welfare association, so ask the mosque for its charity number. Scotland (OSCR) and Northern Ireland (the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland) keep separate registers. If a mosque in England or Wales is not registered, ask why: a charity with income of £5,000 or less does not have to register.

Does registering a mosque as a place of worship make it a registered charity?+No. Certifying a building for worship under the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 is separate from registering a charity. The Charity Commission says this exception applies to buildings, not funds, so a charity that includes a registered place of worship and has income over £5,000 a year must normally register, unless another exception applies. The £100,000 threshold sometimes quoted is for excepted charities such as churches and chapels of certain Christian denominations; the Commission says charities linked to other faith bodies must register if their income is more than £5,000.

What happens to my donation if a mosque building project stalls?+Donations to an appeal for a specific purpose must be used only for that purpose. Charity Commission guidance sets out what trustees must do if an appeal raises too little or its purpose cannot be achieved: use any secondary purpose the appeal stated, contact donors who asked for their money back, and, for gifts above the small-donation limit, start from the position that donors are entitled to a return. Some steps need the Commission’s authorisation. Read the appeal wording before giving and keep your receipt.

Can I Gift Aid a donation to a mosque?+If you are a UK taxpayer and make a Gift Aid declaration to that charity, it can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. Your donations should not be more than four times the tax you paid in that tax year. The charity needs an HMRC charity reference number, which is separate from Charity Commission registration, so ask if you are unsure. Small donations of £30 or less, such as cash in a collection box, may be topped up through the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme without a declaration.

How do I check who runs a mosque charity?+The register lists the charity’s trustees, its governing document and charitable objects, and the accounts and annual returns it has filed. The Charity Commission says trustees have independent control over, and legal responsibility for, a charity’s management and administration. If an appeal involves a building, HM Land Registry’s title register (£7 online for property in England and Wales) shows who owns it. Contact the charity through the details on the register if a collector or appeal is unfamiliar.

Can CharityCompare tell me whether a mosque fund is eligible for Zakat?+No. CharityCompare compares regulator filings. It does not issue religious rulings or certify that a fund can receive Zakat. Ask the mosque how it receives, holds and distributes Zakat and whether it keeps Zakat separate from building or general funds, then follow qualified religious guidance for your circumstances.

How can I give safely to a mosque during Ramadan?+The Charity Commission and Fundraising Regulator advise checking the charity’s name and registration number on the register, making sure it is genuine before giving financial details, and taking care with emails, texts and links. They say a face-to-face collector should have a licence from the local authority, or the Metropolitan Police in Greater London. Paying by card or bank transfer to an account in the charity’s name leaves a record; ask for a receipt for larger cash gifts.

Why is my mosque not on this page?+This page includes charities whose registered name uses “mosque”, “masjid” or “Islamic centre” (including Islamic cultural, community and education centres), because that is how the organisation describes itself. Many mosques are run by charities registered under other names, and spellings vary, so search our directory or the register by name or charity number. We never infer that an organisation is a mosque from its trustees’ names or the community it serves.

What do mosque charity ratings tell me?+CharityCompare Clarity Scores summarise financial and disclosure measures from the dated filings shown on each profile. They do not establish programme effectiveness, clinical quality or the suitability of a service for an individual. Read the accounts period, missing-data notes and regulatory context before using a score.

How are charities included in this comparison?+Profiles are matched on the registered name only, which is how each organisation describes itself, not on activity text or the names of people involved. Organisations registered under other names are missed. Our 14 rated matches and 697 additional basic matches are not an official UK-wide count, and payment does not affect inclusion or ratings.
