# What does it mean if a charity files its accounts late?

**In short:** In England and Wales charities must file annual accounts within ten months of their financial year end. Filing after that is recorded as late on the public register. One late year can be innocent, particularly for small charities, but a repeated pattern signals weak administration and costs points in the Accountability and Transparency beacon.

Data from [CharityCompare editorial](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/), last updated 12 August 2026.

Charities in England and Wales must file annual accounts and a trustees’ annual report within **ten months** of their financial year end. Anything later is publicly recorded as late on the register.

How to read it:

- **One late year** — often innocent. Small charities lose treasurers, and audits slip.

- **A repeated pattern** — a meaningful signal of weak administration.

- **Currently overdue by a long period** — the charity may also be in default on the register.

Filing record sits inside the Accountability and Transparency beacon, the largest of the four at 40 points, because punctual filing is the cheapest available proxy for competent administration.
