Checking a charity

# Are doorstep charity collectors legit?

**In short:** Only if they can give a full registered charity name and number you can verify on the spot, carry ID, and never pressure you to pay immediately. Check the number on CharityCompare or the official register before giving cash or card details.

Data from [CharityCompare editorial](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/), last updated 12 August 2026.

Genuine collectors expect you to verify. Lookalike tabards and sealed buckets are not proof. Prefer donating later via the charity’s website after a [charity number check](https://www.charitycompare.org.uk/guides/how-to-check-a-charity-number).
